Sculptural art exhibition: 13 March to 12 May

A new sculptural art exhibition will feature on the first-floor viewing platform at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre from 13 March to 12 May, showcasing the magnificent works of local artists Robin Fox and Phil Dutton.

Robin Fox

Robin has been professionally sculpting since 2010 having attended Jacob Kramer College of Art in Leeds in the early 1980’s and following a long career in furniture design/making and architectural services. He works from a home studio in the beautiful market town of Hexham, Northumberland.

Robin prefers to make each sculpture as a true original by hand building each piece, no matter how small, rather than casting. He sculpts in a wide variety of materials including high content bronze epoxy resin and ink tinted metal/silverleaf in various finishes – all formed over an internal armature/skeleton making each piece unique, with every layer built up enabling the execution of finer detail. He uses locally sourced and upcycled materials wherever possible including hardwoods, heather and locally hand quarried sandstone.

Much of Robin’s inspiration is attributed to a connection and respect with the rural environment. His subject matter reveals his love of nature and features birds and animals.  He places emphasis on movement, expression, postures and mannerisms. The dynamic surface finishes add to his distinctive style. Robin’s work is well known for often being quirky and humorous.

Robin’s work is represented in several galleries throughout the UK and has been exhibited at Affordable Art Fair Battersea and Hampstead, Manchester Art Fair, The Edinburgh Art Fair, Art Source Dublin, Fresh Art Ascot and ICAF – International Community Arts Festival Rotterdam.

Phil Dutton

Born Manchester 1964 – self-taught artist.

After leaving college in 1983, I began work as a ‘trainee’ in stained glass. Feeling constrained by the limitations of domestic work and leaded lights, I bought a kiln and taught myself the art of painting on glass.

In 2004, I relocated to Cumbria, and worked with an established local business, on many churches and significant historic buildings. I lived only a short walk from Hadrian’s Wall, a Roman quarry and an unexcavated stanegate fort. My interest in the northern frontier grew.
Initially inspired by a book of aerial photography, and later, Google Earth, I began looking at Roman sites along Hadrian’s Wall. I started making compositions using a technique of carved relief, incorporating natural and man-made divisions within the landscape, which echo the lead lines of traditional stained glass.

The result is this ‘’Northern Topographic Series’’ of paintings, finished in metal leaf and oil paint.
Other themes of my work are inspired by man’s earliest marks in the landscape, neolithic rock art and stone circles, through to present day issues relating to human impact on the environment.

My work has been exhibited extensively throughout Cumbria:
2017 C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the year (shortlisted), Rheged.
2017 The Lake Artist’s Society summer exhibition. Grasmere.
2018 Cumbrian Open Exhibition, (joint second place), Upfront Gallery, Penrith.
2018 ‘Remembrance 100’, Carlisle castle.
2019 West Walls Artists ‘Now’ exhibition, (winner, best arts initiative category, Carlisle Living award), Upfront Gallery, Penrith.
2021 Carlisle Historic Quarter Festival, Tullie House. Carlisle.
2022 The Lake Artist’s Society summer exhibition. Grasmere.
2023 The Lake Artist’s Society summer exhibition, (winner, best conceptual artwork, Peter Tyson award), Grasmere.
